General Information Edit
|Family:||Vespoidea --> Formicidae|
|Common & Scientific Names:|
Ants are a wasp-like family of insects in the order Hymenoptera. Ants are believed to first come around as a family of wasps during the time of the dinosaurs, known as the Cretaceous period. They had broke apart from other wasps after the first flowering plants had emerged.
Unlike other wasps, solitary ants are a thing that hardly exists. Almost every species of ants are eusocial, and live in colonies. Most ant colonies are sheltered by a large mound of dirt or sand-like materials. This is colloquially known as an ant hill. Not all ants make ant hills however, army ants migrate in a march-like pattern and are constantly on the move.
The family of ants is scientifically known as Formicidae, due to the formic acid in their venom. While ants belong to a super-family known as Vespoida, their appearance largely resembles a potential sister super-family, known as Apoidea.
Ants are some of the most successful species of animals known to man. In fact, they take up 15% of all animal biomass.
